7 Things I Learned from Collaborating with Populous: Lessons in Stadium Design and Construction Excellence

Designing a world-class stadium is an ambitious task — and helping deliver one is an even bigger honor. During my work on the construction administration phase for Vanderbilt’s new FirstBank Stadium and design development support for the Tennessee Titans’ new stadium via Culture Architecture, I had the privilege of collaborating with Populous, one of the most respected names in sports and entertainment architecture.

Reflecting on these experiences, I’ve gathered seven major lessons that stand out — lessons that not only shaped these iconic projects but also reshaped how I view design, collaboration, and construction excellence. If you’re looking to one day work with leading firms like Populous, mastering digital tools and design thinking is key. (More on that at the end!)

1. Every Detail Tells a Story Populous excels at infusing identity into every inch of a project. At Vanderbilt, I learned that from the concourses to the seating bowls, every design move communicates something about the client, the fans, and the experience. Excellence isn’t just about big moves — it’s about sweating the small stuff that guests will feel, even if they can’t name it.

2. Construction Administration is an Art, Not Just a Checklist On a world-class stadium project, construction administration (CA) is about so much more than catching errors or approving submittals. It’s about being a proactive partner, identifying opportunities to improve buildability, stay on schedule, and even enhance the design in the field. CA, when done well, is a final stage of design evolution.

3. Modernist Boldness Can Elevate Tradition While the Titans stadium embraced a heroic scale, I found the new Vanderbilt stadium had a subtle but powerful modernist expression: bold, clear forms; an honest structural logic; and refined simplicity. Working through the field issues made me appreciate how strong modern principles can harmonize beautifully with a collegiate legacy.

4. Digital Mastery is Non-Negotiable Working with a firm like Populous means operating fluently across BIM models, Rhino 3D geometry, construction documentation platforms, and field coordination systems. It’s not enough to “kind of know” these tools. Real collaboration happens when your digital skill set is second nature — a language for problem-solving in real time.

5. Great Design Survives Value Engineering At Vanderbilt, as with any major project, there were rounds of scope refinements and value management. I witnessed firsthand that when a design is deeply considered and clear in its intentions, it survives the hard conversations. The best ideas aren’t fragile — they’re resilient.

6. Team Trust is Everything One reason Populous delivers massive, complex projects successfully is the deep trust built across disciplines — architects, engineers, contractors, and owners. When I stepped in during CA, it was clear that collaboration wasn’t a buzzword. It was a living culture. The earlier you build that trust, the smoother every late-night coordination call and urgent field walk becomes.

7. The Next Generation of Design is Built on Integration Seeing how Populous integrates design, technology, operations, and guest experience planning under one umbrella reinforced a big lesson: future leaders in architecture won’t just “draw” better — they’ll think holistically. They’ll bridge design dreams and operational realities seamlessly.

Collaborating with Populous was a career-shaping experience, and it validated something I’ve believed for a long time: Excellence isn’t a mystery. It’s a commitment to detail, collaboration, and continuous learning. If you want to prepare yourself for opportunities like these, building elite digital skills and a design-thinking mindset is essential.
