Five Iconic Projects by Architecture Firm Moody Nolan
Founded in 1982 by Curtis J. Moody and Howard E. Nolan, Moody Nolan has made its mark as the most prominent African American-owned architecture firm in the United States. Moody Nolan has demonstrated its architectural prowess through a plethora of iconic projects. 1. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (Washington D.C., 2020)
Moody Nolan’s renovation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, which modernist icon Mies van der Rohe initially designed, is an outstanding accomplishment. The renovation gave the building a new lease on life while maintaining van der Rohe’s vision. The company improved the library’s functionality by adding a rooftop event space, a café on the ground floor, an auditorium, and new entrance pavilions. Their adaptive reuse strategy combined contemporary and historical elements to create a vibrant and welcoming community space.
2. Legacy House (Columbus, Ohio, 2020)
Legacy House is a pro bono initiative that began as part of the company’s 35th anniversary celebrations, with the intention of assisting needy families. This innovative residential concept features a design that can adapt to a family’s changing needs across multiple generations. The home’s net-zero energy efficiency and universal accessibility reflect Moody Nolan’s dedication to sustainable and inclusive design.
3. Nashville Music City Center (Nashville, Tennessee, 2013)
Reflective of the city’s vibrant music scene, the Nashville Music City Center was designed in collaboration with tvsdesign. This enormous 1,200,000-square-foot convention center embodies the spirit of Nashville through its guitar-like design. The green roof resembles the rolling hills of Tennessee and is among the nation’s most extensive green roofs. The project exemplifies Moody Nolan’s ability to design monumental structures that retain a sense of regional identity.
4. Columbus Metropolitan Library – Parsons Branch (Columbus, Ohio, 2016)
The Columbus Metropolitan Library is located in Columbus, Ohio.
For this project, Moody Nolan aimed to design a contemporary library that would serve as a community hub. The end result was a vibrant, accessible space with ample communal and private spaces for learning and interaction that was flooded with natural light. Incorporating energy-efficient features, the design also prioritized sustainability, resulting in the building’s LEED Gold certification.
5. Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) at The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio, 2005)
RPAC, the largest recreational facility in the United States, exemplifies Moody Nolan’s ability to design highly functional, expansive projects. This facility has more than 500,000 square feet of space and includes fitness centers, swimming pools, climbing walls, and wellness areas. The building’s exterior glass wall provides a view into the interior activities, a characteristic of Moody Nolan’s architectural designs.
